The affair can be over. She can be gone. The messages can be deleted. He can be home. You can even decide that you want to stay married. And somehow, your fucking brain is still back there.Replaying conversations.Reconstructing timelines.Remembering things he said six months ago that suddenly sound completely different.Wondering what else you missed.Wondering if there’s more you still don’t know.Wondering whether that weird feeling you had that one Tuesday actually meant something. You can be having a perfectly good day and then one tiny thing happens—a notification, a song, a change in his tone, a memory—and there you are again.Back in it.And eventually you start wondering:
Why can’t I stop thinking about the affair?
Because here’s the part nobody really prepares you for:
The affair ending and your mind feeling safe again are two completely different things.
Your Brain Is Trying to Make Sense of a Story That Changed
Before you knew about the betrayal, you had a version of your life that made sense. You thought you knew where he was.You thought you knew what was happening in your marriage. You believed certain conversations. You trusted certain explanations. You have memories that felt one way when they happened. Then you found out something that changed the context of everything. And suddenly your brain wants to go back through the whole damn filing cabinet.
Wait. Was that when it was happening? Is that why he acted weird that night? Was that explanation even true?Who was he texting that day?Was I sitting right next to him when he was talking to her? What else don’t I know?
It’s like your brain has decided to become a detective nobody fucking hired.Except it makes sense. You learned that something important was happening in your own life without your knowledge.Of course part of you wants to figure out how you missed it.
One of the Hardest Parts? You Start Questioning Yourself
You don’t just question him after betrayal.Sometimes you start questioning your own fucking memory.Things you never thought twice about suddenly come back.A night he got home late.A trip.A weird excuse. The way he turned his phone over.A conversation where something felt off but you couldn’t put your finger on why.And now you’re looking backward with information you didn’t have then and asking yourself:
How the hell did I not know?
But that’s an unfair question to ask yourself. You weren’t supposed to know. You weren’t conducting an investigation. You were living your life with someone you trusted. There’s a huge difference between missing something obvious and believing someone who was actively giving you a different version of reality. You didn’t have today’s information back then.Stop expecting yesterday’s version of you to have known it.
Then Come the Fucking Triggers
Some triggers make perfect sense. The other woman’s name. The place they went. The date you found out.The song that was playing. The hotel. The app.Whatever became attached to the betrayal. But then there are the stupid little ones. His phone lights up.He’s fifteen minutes late.He takes longer than usual at the store. He’s quieter than normal. He says he’s tired. It’s a particular day of the week. You smell a perfume.Someone mentions a city. And your entire body goes:
NOPE. SOMETHING IS WRONG.
Maybe something is wrong.Maybe absolutely nothing is wrong. That’s what makes this shit so exhausting. Before betrayal, a late trip home might have just been a late trip home. After betrayal, your brain knows that sometimes ordinary-looking things aren’t ordinary. So now it pays attention. To everything.
You Can Want Your Marriage and Still Struggle With This
This one matters because women beat the absolute shit out of themselves over it.You decided to stay.So shouldn’t you be moving on?No.Choosing your marriage isn’t a magic reset button. You can love him and still be angry. You can believe he’s changing and still be scared you’re being fooled again. You can have an amazing weekend together and get triggered Monday morning. You can laugh together at dinner and cry in the shower two hours later. You can want your marriage more than anything and still wonder whether you’ll ever trust him completely again. Those things can exist at the same time.
Staying doesn’t erase what happened.
And deciding to rebuild doesn’t mean you agreed to pretend it didn’t hurt.
“But I Just Want to Stop Thinking About It.”
Of course you do.Because it’s fucking exhausting. You want one day where your brain doesn’t ask another question. You want to watch a movie without somehow connecting the plot to your own marriage. You want to hear his phone buzz without noticing. You want to stop replaying conversations. You want to go to sleep instead of mentally reopening a case file from eight months ago at 2:13 a.m.And sometimes you get pissed at yourself because you think:
Why am I doing this to myself?
But screaming STOP THINKING ABOUT IT at your own brain usually works about as well as someone telling you to “calm down.”Now you’re still thinking about it.You’re just fucking annoyed about thinking about it too.
Sometimes You Need Somewhere to Put the Thoughts
This is where writing can be incredibly useful. Not because journaling magically fixes betrayal. And not because you’re going to write three pages and suddenly become a peaceful woodland creature who no longer gives a shit about what happened. That’s not what we’re doing here. We’re giving your thoughts somewhere to go.Instead of carrying:
What if he’s still lying?Why did he do this?Why wasn’t I enough?Do I actually believe him?What triggered me today?Why am I so angry again?Do I want this marriage?What do I need from him?What do I need for myself?
…around in your head all fucking day, you can put them somewhere. You can look at them. You can come back to them. You can notice which questions keep showing up.You can separate what you know from what you’re afraid of.And sometimes you can finally realize:
Oh.That’s what’s actually bothering me.
Especially When Betrayal Brain Shows Up at 2 A.M.
Why does your brain always want to solve your entire marriage when you’re supposed to be sleeping?Everything gets louder at night. There’s nothing distracting you.The house is quiet. And suddenly your brain would like to discuss something that happened eleven months ago.Fantastic.Instead of following the thought down seventeen different rabbit holes, try putting it somewhere.Write down what you’re thinking. What triggered it?What are you afraid it means? What do you actually know?Is there something you need to ask him?Is this a question that needs an answer—or is your brain searching for certainty that nobody can give you tonight? You don’t necessarily have to solve the thought.Sometimes you just need to get it the fuck out of your head.
That’s Exactly Why We Created This Journal
Get It the Fuck Out of Your Head: A Guided Journal for the Woman Trying to Survive the Mental Shitstorm After Betrayal was created for this part.
Not the pretty healing quotes. Not pretending you’re fine. Not telling you whether you should stay or leave. The shit that’s actually happening inside your head after betrayal. The questions. The triggers. The anger. The sadness. The confusion. The things you want to say but don’t know how to say.The thoughts you keep replaying. And the things you may not be ready to say out loud to anybody yet. It’s guided, so you aren’t opening a blank notebook and staring at a page thinking:
Okay…what the fuck am I supposed to write?
You have somewhere to begin. And because women process differently, we made it available two ways.
Prefer Digital? Use the Guided Journal in Goodnotes
If your iPad is basically attached to your hand, the digital version is $17.It’s a PDF that works great in Goodnotes, so you can import it and write directly on the pages with an Apple Pencil or stylus. For some women, digital is perfect. It’s portable. It’s convenient. It can stay tucked away on your device instead of sitting on the nightstand where somebody might pick it up.And when betrayal brain decides to make an appearance somewhere completely inconvenient, your journal can already be with you.

Prefer Pen and Paper? There’s a Paperback on Amazon
And then there are those of us who need an actual fucking pen. There’s something different about physically writing it out.Sitting down.Opening the journal.Putting the phone away. And letting everything that’s been bouncing around inside your head land on paper.
The paperback edition of Get It the Fuck Out of Your Head is a 206-page guided journal, available on Amazon for $19.99.
Write in it.Scribble in the margins.Cry on the damn thing.Close it when you’ve had enough.Come back tomorrow. It’s yours.

You Don’t Have to Figure Out Your Whole Marriage Today
That’s the thing I wish more women heard after betrayal. You don’t have to know everything today. You don’t have to decide the entire future of your marriage tonight. You don’t have to know exactly when you’ll trust him again. You don’t have to have the perfect healing timeline. You don’t have to stop loving him because he hurt you.And you don’t have to pretend you’re okay because you decided to stay.Maybe today isn’t about figuring everything out.Maybe today is about taking one thought that’s been running around your head…putting it somewhere else…and giving yourself a little fucking room to breathe.
The affair may be over.Your brain didn’t get the memo.
So grab a pen—or your Apple Pencil—
and get it the fuck out of your head.🖤 YEG
